Is black abstract wallpaper suitable for contemporary interiors?

Absolutely. Abstraction can actually be easier to introduce into a contemporary room than a recognisable decorative motif because it behaves more like artwork than ornament. There are no flowers, leaves or historical references dictating what should sit beside it; colour, scale and movement do most of the work. Large-scale abstraction also changes the relationship between wallpaper and furniture. Instead of creating a background and then decorating in front of it, the wall becomes one of the largest visual elements in the composition. A low leather sofa, a sculptural chair or a simple walnut cabinet can look particularly strong against it because their silhouettes remain clear against all that movement. Does black wallpaper make a room feel too dark?

Not automatically. Darkness and smallness are not the same thing. A pale wall reflects more light, but a dark wall can create visual depth because its boundaries become less immediately obvious.
