What is pastel floral wallpaper, and where does the floral tradition come from?

Pastel floral wallpaper pairs one of the oldest motifs in the history of wallpaper, the flower, with a soft, light palette of tones such as pink, peach and mint. Floral pattern is as old as wallpaper itself. According to the Victoria and Albert Museum, wallpaper emerged in Europe in the 16th century, and many of the earliest designs used stylised flowers borrowed from the embroideries and textiles of the day. These first papers were printed in black ink on small single sheets; joining sheets into long rolls only became standard in the mid-17th century. By the mid-18th century, better woodblock printing made multi-coloured patterns possible, and in Britain flowers such as roses and carnations became the favourite motifs. Surviving papers from that period, now in the V&A wallpaper collection, also show that Georgian rooms were often far brighter than we picture them, with vivid blues and pinks on the walls.

Pastel Floral Wallpaper by Vesper Royale continues that lineage in a different medium: loose watercolour blooms in pink, peach and mint, with small star-shaped flowers set across a cream ground. The tradition is centuries old. The hand is unmistakably contemporary.

Why did Victorian designers argue about floral wallpaper?

Until around 1840, every wallpaper was printed by hand from wooden blocks. The first wallpaper printing machine was patented in 1839, and machine-printed papers, mostly simple florals and geometrics with small repeats, made wallpaper affordable for almost everyone. The V&A records that British production rose from around one million rolls in 1834 to nearly nine million in 1860. The most common designs of the period were brightly coloured florals with realistically shaded „cabbage” roses. Design reformers such as the architect A. W. N. Pugin objected: in their view, flowers drawn with false depth did not belong on a flat wall. Pugin favoured conventional, stylised ornament, and Owen Jones reduced flowers and leaves to formal, symmetrical shapes. Most manufacturers and customers, however, kept buying the naturalistic styles. William Morris, who designed more than 50 wallpaper patterns, found a middle way. His flowers were stylised but drawn from close observation of real plants, and he preferred common wild and garden flowers to exotic blooms. His early design Trellis (1864) was inspired by the rose trellises at Red House, his first home, and Willow Bough (1885) grew out of drawings of willow branches he made at Kelmscott Manor.

Pastel Floral Wallpaper sits closer to Morris than to the cabbage rose. The blooms are painterly, yet they stay on the surface, spaced generously so the wall reads as pattern rather than illusion.

Does floral wallpaper work in a modern home?

After a slump in the 1970s and 1980s, wallpaper has made a strong comeback. The V&A notes that the fashion for feature walls encouraged larger, more confident patterns, while digital printing and a revival of screen printing allowed artists and independent designers to create wallpaper directly. Today, floral wallpaper is just as likely to be a single statement wall as a fully papered room. A practical rule of thumb: a floral with plenty of open background reads lighter and calmer than a dense all-over pattern, which makes it easier to pair with strong furniture colours.

Pastel Floral Wallpaper is printed to your exact wall size, so it can hold a single feature wall or wrap an entire room, sloped attic ceilings included. The palette is soft. The character comes from what you set against it: olive velvet, dusty pink, raw jute.

Is floral wallpaper a good choice for a children’s room?

Wallpaper designed specifically for children has existed since the late 19th century. According to the V&A, manufacturers began producing nursery papers in response to the Victorian belief that children were especially sensitive to their surroundings. The illustrator Walter Crane, a prolific wallpaper designer, created one of the best-known examples, Sleeping Beauty (1879), in which sleeping figures are entwined in a rose.

Pastel Floral Wallpaper keeps the lightness of a nursery paper without its sentimentality. It suits a child’s room today and still holds its own when that room grows up.

Questions About This Pattern

Do I need an interior designer to choose the right wallpaper?

Not necessarily. Most people can choose confidently on their own — and if you'd like a second opinion, email us or book a free 1-hour design consultation with the studio for guidance on colour, pattern and placement. A paid consultation is only needed if you're after a full interior design service for your space, beyond just choosing a pattern.

Can I order a sample of this wallpaper first?

Yes — ordering a sample is optional but recommended. Screen colours can differ slightly from the printed result, so a sample confirms the exact tone in your own light before you commit to the full wall.

Can I customise the size or colour?

Size is always made to your exact wall dimensions — just enter height and width. Colour customisation is available for most designs; this piece is part of our standard collection, not a limited-edition print, so recolouring is possible on request.

How long does production take?

5-7 working days. Every Vesper Royale wallpaper is made to order — we hold no stock — so production begins only once you place your order.
